Report: Manchester City Join Race to Sign Xavi Simons

Home

Manchester City have entered the race to sign RB Leipzig winger Xavi Simons, according to transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

Tavolieri reports that City have reopened contact with Simons’ agent Ali Barat, amid growing expectations that winger Sávio could leave the Etihad Stadium for Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, Chelsea are believed to be in advanced negotiations with both the player and RB Leipzig.

Contract situation: Simons is under contract with Leipzig until June 2027. Sky Sports reported earlier this month that the Dutch international is expected to sign a long-term deal with Chelsea until 2032, with talks described as “very advanced” and an official announcement anticipated soon.

Transfer history: Simons joined Leipzig in the summer of 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported fee of around £43 million. He began his youth career at Barcelona’s La Masia academy before moving to PSG, spending a season at PSV Eindhoven, then returning to PSG before making the switch to Leipzig.

Last season’s performance: In the 2024/25 season, Simons played in 33 matches across all competitions, scoring 11 goals and providing 8 assists. His pace, dribbling, and creativity have attracted interest from several European giants, including previous links to Bayern Munich.

If Sávio leaves for Tottenham, Pep Guardiola’s side could make a strong push to secure Simons’ signature, potentially setting up a direct battle with Chelsea in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.
